Phoenix Author Takes Part in Library’s Author Series

Phoenix Author Takes Part in Library’s Author Series

Noted Phoenix author Matthew C. Whitaker, Ph.D., will discuss his book “Race Work” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., Pulliam Auditorium as part of the library’s free October Author Series.

In this biography, Whitaker explores the history of the Ragsdales’ family and how their familial traditions of entrepreneurship, professionalism, activism and “race work” helped form their activist identity and placed them in a position to help desegregate Phoenix.

Whitaker is an assistant professor of United States History, African-American Studies, and Justice and Social Inquiry at Arizona State University. He specializes in African-American history, the African Diaspora, Civil and Human Rights, Critical Race Theory and the American West. His research focuses on African-American leadership, activism and the struggle for racial, economic and gender equality.

Books will be sold at the program and an author signing will follow.

For information on the author series or to learn more about the Phoenix Public Library, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org or call 602-262-4636.

Chunking It Down

Life Story Writing - Story Lady in Cardiff by the Sea: Chunking It Down

Chunking It Down

MoreThelly

"The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think."
-- Edwin Schlossberg

As you write your stories ask yourself if you create an atmosphere within your story that causes the reader to think:

Did they chuckle over the same memory?

Did you perhaps cause a tear of remembrance in that person?

Did they feel that their time was well spent reading your piece?

If your stories aren't fulfilling this purpose, you probably need to *chunk it down*

"Whatever you're working on, take small bites. The task will not be overwhelming if you can reduce it to its smallest component."
--Richard Russo, Writer's Digest - February 2003

"Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very'; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be."
--Mark Twain

I don't know if you tend to *gild the lily* like I do...sometimes my writing is just *wordy* and and I need to cut the fat.

I call it *chunking it down*

I read this in Writers Digest.

Got padding? Nancy Kress tells how small-scale surgery can transform your draft into lean, salable fiction:

"Words that add no new information or aren't repeated for emphasis are just padding. A sentence may carry three or five or eight of them, each one as unnoticeable as an extra two ounces on your hips but collectively adding up to a large burden of fat."

"Ridding your prose of padding will pick up the pace considerably, since pace just means how much new information a reader receives per each, say, 100 words. Fat-free prose is cleaner, crisper, quicker."

"Here are four tips to help you write a healthy story:

1. Only give pertinent information once unless you're using repetition for literary effect. Redundancy undermines your authority and annoys readers.

2. When deciding whether or not to include explanation, trust your readers to know as much as you. Over- explanation is insulting.

3. Pick up the pace by cutting any word, phrase or sentence that doesn't offer new information or emphasize a crucial aspect of your story.

4. Cut out important connections to create suspense, surprise and increased reader involvement."

Author Denise Turney Hosting 6th Annual Writing Contest That Promotes Literacy

October 3, 2005 -- For the sixth year, Denise Turney, author of the books Portia, Love Has Many Faces and Spiral is hosting and coordinating the Chistell Publishing Poetry and Short Story Writing Competition.

The contest is open to the public. There is no reading fee. Because she believes in the power of written expression, Turney has always picked up the costs involved in administering the contest which is open to a world of readers – a rainbow of writers.

“Perhaps none of us will ever realize the impact, the reach, literature has had and continues to have upon us. Literature shapes our culture, our communities – our lives. To insure there are no financial barriers that prevent members of the global community from entering the contest, I am picking up all costs involved with administering the contest. It has always been our goal to encourage people to think beyond their comfort zones. We encourage readers and writers around the globe to appreciate differences between themselves and others, specifically those from other cultures. It is always an excellent time to do this. We're excited to be a part of a global healing effort. When you think about the power of the written word, the longevity of a story, it only makes very good sense to do this.”

All writers interested in learning more about the contest may do so by contacting Chistell Publishing at – http://www.chistell.com

Featured in Parade, Today's Black Woman, Essence, Sisters In Style, Modern Dad Magazine, Obsidian II, The Pittsburgh Quarterly, The Trenton Times, The Philadelphia Tribune, and The College of New Jersey Literary Review among numerous other publications throughout the nation, Turney has gained recognition for her ability to capture real life scenarios in a manner that enthralls her audience and places them right in the shoes of her characters. Currently the author is putting the finishing touches on her fourth and fifth novels, aptly titled Zoe: What Have We Learned and Run (both books are due out in 2006). “My dream,” shares Turney, “Is to be a writer who brings a multitude of readers stories that stir their hearts, as well as heal, encourage, guide, teach, and support their own dreams!”

Turney's work is featured online at http://www.chistell.com where readers can read the first chapters of her books (including her newest titles) for free.

CHIEF QUANAH PARKER

CHIEF QUANAH PARKER

from Del Abe Jones

Born around Eighteen forty-five

In what is now Oklahoma

To captive Cynthia Ann Parker

And Father, Chief Nocona.

Raised in Ancient Tribal ways

Learned to ride by three or four

His Band following the Buffalo

Trading with other Tribes and more.

While avoiding Army Troopers

He was taught of weaponry

The lance, knife, bow and arrow

The choice of the Comanche.

Although they had some guns, too

They didn’t trust the aim

While galloping on horseback

Into a Battle’s deadly game.

His Mother, taken as a child

Could not teach, the white man’s way

Learning from Braves of their conquests

And longing to join them one day.

His Mother and Sister were stolen

And when his Father was killed

In the raid by the Texas Rangers

His hatred of the white was instilled.

Eager to seek out his revenge

On the scourge of the white man

Who wreaked death and their disease

With their ethnic cleansing plan.

He saw the killing of the Buffalo

That once covered the open plain

Slaughtered into near extinction

Never to return to roam again.

During his youth warfare was constant

Treaties were made, only to be broken

Lies told in the form of promises

When the white man’s word was spoken.

Time and again, Peace was made

With other Tribes and with the whites

While all the while they were provoked

And stripped of all their Human Rights.

After his Band lost many members

He joined the Quahada Comanche

Of whom his Father had been Chief

Back when they had lived Free.

He refused to accept a treaty

To confine them to a reservation

As he became the last Chief

Of the whole Comanche Nation.

He remained on the warpath

Raiding Texas and Mexico

Outwitting the Army and others

Wherever he made the blood flow.

He was almost killed in Texas

When he attacked Adobe Wells

Against some Buffalo Hunters

That’s what the story tells.

By Eighteen and seventy-five

The band was starving and weary

The Army asked for their surrender

And to sign a Peace Treaty.

Quanah rode out to a mesa

And saw a Wolf coming his way

Then turn and trot to the northeast

Towards where Fort Sill lay.

Overhead an Eagle glided lazily

Then, towards the Fort took wing

Quanah thought this was a sign

The kind the gods would bring.

In June, Eighteen seventy-five

He surrendered with his Band

To travel down the white man’s road

Into a strange and unknown land.

He learned the English language

And lobbied Congress for his Nation

He invested in a railroad

Was made Judge on the Reservation.

He learned of the way of politics

Became friends with the President

But older Chiefs thought him too young

And his white blood, they did resent.

In Ninety-two they split the Tribe

One faction on his side, one not

Those who thought he’d sold them out

And all those with whom, he’d fought.

He was a great Chief and Warrior

Who never forgot old traditions

But still able to bend enough

To survive those new conditions.

He was beloved by his People

And respected by old enemies

Whose word could be trusted

And who lived by signed treaties.

He passed in Nineteen eleven

But leaves a Great legacy

Which lives on in every member

Of the Tribe of the Comanche.

Today the bodies of Chief Quanah and his Mother lie side by side at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

The Comanche reservation was closed in 1901 with 10,000 or so surviving members, half of whom still live on their own property in Oklahoma.
