Class helps E.V. residents write the stories of their lives

The love of Pat Myklebust’s life is her only grandson, Michael. The 9-year-old lives in Colorado, hundreds of miles from Myklebust’s Chandler home, and the distance that separates them troubles her.

"All the things that most grandchildren grow up with and are exposed to, he’s not getting," Myklebust says. Because Michael has no siblings and no cousins, he’s the only one charged with carrying on the family history, a task his grandmother thinks will be difficult since she’s not around to share it with him.

"You feel like soon the only memories he’ll have of us will be what I write down for him," she says.

Telling veterans' stories is a life-long passion

When I was a child, my brother and I spent hours playing in the woods pretending we were G.I. Joe characters.

The goal of our games was to free the world from evil-doers.

Our wild imaginations led my brother to a love of history. And I developed a desire to learn about war from the men and women who were there.

I have held stories of veterans close to my heart since those days of playing in the woods.

My dad is a Vietnam Veteran, his father was a Prisoner of War during World War II, and my other grandfather also served in World War II. I loved learning about their experiences as I grew up.

However, it wasn't until I visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. that I discovered working with veterans was my passion.

RF brings writing help

A grant is bringing a writing specialist into every classroom at Rocky Ford Schools this year.

The district used a Comprehensive School Reform grant to secure the services of Gregory Denman to help encourage teachers and students in the battle to improve student writing skills. Denman not only talks to teachers at in-services and training sessions, he visits the classrooms and helps them with each individual student. By the end of the year, he will have been in every classroom four times working with students and teachers at the same time. Already there has been progress according to teachers in the program. They are looking forward to working with Denman again and seeing how he plans to encourage writing skills in math classes.
