Writing Nonfiction Taxes Novelist

Writing Nonfiction Taxes Novelist Jonathan Coe

By Jeffrey Goldfarb
EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Jonathan Coe, the best-selling British novelist whose satiric prose has won numerous literary awards, found himself challenged by the non-fiction genre in his biography of an avant-garde writer of the 1960s.

"I thought it would be easier than writing fiction," Coe said Sunday at the Edinburgh Book Festival. "I don't know why I thought that. I suppose because I didn't have to make anything up and invent characters and the narrative arc was there for me. And, of course, this was absolute nonsense."

Life Story Writing Discussion and Mail List

Everyone has their own unique style and method of writing, just as painters or actors have distinct styles. So I can only speak of my own writing techniques. But I thought I would outline some basics that I think make a good article. A unique angle is important to a story, as well as proper spelling of names, links that actually work, and correct factual data. But organization is the most time consuming aspect of writing for me. A poorly organized article is the main damper I experience when reading many articles in Indy Media, for instance. If you cannot tell what relevance different components of the story have to one another, something is wrong. People perhaps think writing is just about regurgitating some facts down on paper. But it is in the presentation of those facts and opinions, much as it is in the display of fine food at a catered event, that makes an article palatable or not. It is in the presentation, as if it were a stage event, and in writing, I see rough drafts as rehearsals, and the final published piece as the performance.

Lost at sea: Real-life story of 'Open Water' remains a mystery
Tony Horwitz, New York Times
August 28, 2004 OPEVAR0828

In the film "Open Water," a vacationing couple surface from a scuba dive to find that their tour boat has vanished. Left for hours amid circling sharks, one of the divers finally vents his rage at having been abandoned.

"Unbelievable!" he screams.

Actually, it's not. The movie is loosely based on a real event: the 1998 stranding of two Americans off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The filmmakers, both New Yorkers, are divers and learned of the incident from a scuba newsletter. They borrowed the premise of an abandoned couple but fictionalized the rest, in part because the true story had too many twists to seem credible on screen.

LEXINGTON, NC (PRWEB) August 23, 2004 -- Writing911.com is now offering its popular writing workshop, “Writing for the Real World: A Refresher for Busy Professionals,” as an online course, or e-course. The first e-course will start September 13, 2004, with classes running through the fall.

The course is taught in three segments. They will also learn the difference between genuine mistakes and questions of style.

In Segment Two, “Making Your Writing Concise,” participants will learn to find and repair the weak spots in their writing. They will also learn how to how to build a better sentence and get to the point by rearranging misplaced modifiers, cutting deadwood phrases and redundancies, and activating verbs.

In Segment Three, “Making Your Writing Clear,” participants will practice a handful of writing tricks that will make their writing easier to read, getting their messages across more quickly to their readers.

“This is a great class for busy professionals who need to freshen up their writing skills,” says Kivi Leroux Miller, president of Writing911.com and instructor of the course. “We use a straight-forward, practical approach that is appropriate for the business and nonprofit worlds. Students can apply what they are learning right away,” says Miller.

I never thought I would make it this far: 600 columns published since December 1991. I'm proud of that record, impressed by my own achievement -- but not too impressed. After all, the fear and intimidation that comes from a deadline is a great motivator.

But the real story is not fear and intimidation, even though sometimes that's what it takes to get me started. The real story is the satisfaction that comes from writing.

Writing well
I HAVE featured pieces by the author of this week's piece, Mr Sunanda K. Datta-Ray, a number of times previously. Normally, he writes serious pieces about weighty political issues. In this piece, he turns his talent - and very successfully, too - to satire.

Because - inspired by his piece - I got carried away with my own little story (see The Worksheet), there isn't room to say much about his writing technique.

Miss Pee Pee

Shortly after the beginning of a show one night while we were at sea, I left the front row area when the lights began to dim, so as not to disturb the comedian when he came out on stage.

As I gingerly found my way out, the star of the night singled me out saying "I know where you’re going!" saying it in a sing-song manner so as to be funny. "Mention my name and you’ll get a good seat!" The spotlight was on me all the way up the aisle...

Have you ever had an embarrassing moment? Miss Pee Pee, written by Thelly, details her most embarrassing moment during a comedian's show on a cruise. The effects of that one moment lasted for the entire cruise and then some. Read on!

Help Make Blogs More Visible!

Help Make Blogs More Visible!

NOTE: Be sure you paste live links for the Path List below.

There are by some estimates more than a million weblogs. But most of them get no visibility in search engines. Only a few "A-List" blogs get into the top search engine results for a given topic, while the majority of blogs just don't get noticed. The reason is that the smaller blogs don't have enough links pointing to them. But this posting could solve that. Let's help the smaller blogs get more visibility!

This posting is GoMeme 4.0. It is part of an experiment to see if we can create a blog posting that helps 1000's of blogs get higher rankings in Google. So far we have tried 3 earlier variations. Our first test, GoMeme 1.0, spread to nearly 740 blogs in 2.5 days. This new version 4.0 is shorter, simpler, and fits more easily into your blog.

Why are we doing this? We want to help thousands of blogs get more visibility in Google and other search engines. How does it work? Just follow the instructions below to re-post this meme in your blog and add your URL to the end of the Path List below. As the meme spreads onwards from your blog, so will your URL. Later, when your blog is indexed by search engines, they will see the links pointing to your blog from all the downstream blogs that got this via you, which will cause them to rank your blog higher in search results. Everyone in the Path List below benefits in a similar way as this meme spreads. Try it!
Instructions: Just copy this entire post and paste it into your blog. Then add your URL to the end of the path list below, and pass it on!
