short-story writing contest deadline

The News' short-story writing contest deadline is Jan. 23

1/11/2006

Monday, Jan. 23 at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for the 2006 Buffalo News short story writing contest, which focuses on mystery and suspense short stories.
Once again, authors must integrate a passage (see below) that The News supplies in the story. It can be at the beginning, the end or anywhere in between.

A panel of judgeswill select the winners. Their stories will be published in the Life & Arts section on Feb. 7. Winners will be notified by phone.

Stories will be judged on development of mystery/suspense plot, characters, integration of passage supplied by The News, quality of writing and creativity.

Stories must be titled.

Here are the rules:

The contest is only for current residents of the eight counties of Western New York.

All entries must be original work and a maximum of 1,500 words in length (that includes the passage we provide).

The contest is for teen and adult writers. Only one entry per person.

Subject matter and language must be suitable for a family newspaper.

Submissions must be typed and double-spaced. No hand-written manuscripts can be accepted. (NO folders or plastic covers, please.)

Manuscripts cannot be returned and individual critiques cannot be given by The News staff.

Entries must include your real name (no pen names), address and daytime phone number. (Include this information at the top of the first page of your story.)

The News reserves the rights to the winning stories
