Kachiri McElroy is a 17-year-old girl who has taken charge of her life and is writing her own story. The first chapter in Kachiri’s story was finished Dec. 16, when she was presented with her General Education Development certificate.

The second chapter is still a blank page, but she is determined it will continue to be a story that will make her parents, Heather and Erwin McElroy, proud.

Kachiri made some bad choices early in her life and landed in the Adams County Youth Correctional facility in Brighton. The experience was a wake-up call to the slight, talkative teen who is determined to make something of her life.

In the beginning, Kachiri said she decided to try for her GED just to see what she could do.

“I didn’t think I was smart enough to do it, but now I know I am,” she said.

After her release, Kachiri wants to attend Front Range Community College and study criminal law. Her dream is to help troubled juveniles before they find themselves in a locked facility.

Kachiri’s mother said she is proud of her daughter.

“I’m happy for her,” Heather McElroy said. “She had a goal, and she completed it.”
