PIERRE, S.D. - Ninth-graders improved their scores from last year, but the state's fifth-graders scored lower in a statewide assessment of writing proficiency.

Sixty-eight percent of the ninth-graders scored at the `proficient' level on the Stanford Writing Assessment this year, up from 64 percent last year, the state Department of Education said Tuesday.
