Writing Nonfiction Taxes Novelist
Writing Nonfiction Taxes Novelist Jonathan Coe
By Jeffrey Goldfarb
EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Jonathan Coe, the best-selling British novelist whose satiric prose has won numerous literary awards, found himself challenged by the non-fiction genre in his biography of an avant-garde writer of the 1960s.
"I thought it would be easier than writing fiction," Coe said Sunday at the Edinburgh Book Festival. "I don't know why I thought that. I suppose because I didn't have to make anything up and invent characters and the narrative arc was there for me. And, of course, this was absolute nonsense."
